The “earthy smell”- at least to my nose – is that of rich soil after a rain…pleasant, a bit moist, but sure not unpleasant by any means!
BTW something that has bothered me all day since I first replied. If you paid $150 for a rump roast may I suggest you shop around? OTOH maybe you meant you bought 2 of them for $150? That just seems awfully high priced for a rump roast IMHO…
